Embryon Description

Maybe you're about to listen to this album and find yourself wondering what this band is all about.

Well, EMBRYON is, quite simply, a rock band that flips between Power Rock and Hard Rock, however, groups like this are rare.

With influences as varied as Metallica, Foo Fighters, and Dave Vanian, the melody-heavy "Don't Believe" or "Mean Machine," sit comfortably alongside the... (read more)

Gig review: Tres Calaveras + Silicone Bullet (Dirty South) - 15/10/10

(alan@rockmatrix.co.uk)

The initial Looks Dirty night in July was reduced to three acts when band members were trapped in other countries due to plane strikes. The two bands in question, Silicone Bullet and Kitty Lipps were back on the bill for the second instalment of South East London’s only night dedicated to hard rock.rnrnKicking off the night were EMBRYON (6.5/10) who bring forward a style of power rock which at times has some nice melodic touches. 'Don't believe' rumbles along with shouty vocals, ensuring everyone is not just awake but listening as well. The laptop fuelled affects add something a little different to the usual rock template.rnrnFront girl Marie Repulsive prowls the floor at the Dirty South with Essex band HOLLYWOOD DOLL (7), inflicting some vicious vocal lacerations on those who dare step too close. Her punky directness threatens to hit you squarely between the eyes and is at odds with her diminutive presence but provide the band with a vital cutting edge. The self titled 'Hollywood doll' complete with a fine Matt Rowe guitar solo is just one of several highlights, including the vocalist singing part of a track lying flat on her back.rnrnThere are so many bands influenced by Pantera or other southern sounding acts these days you begin to wonder if any of them are aware that there are guitarists other than Dimebag. Fortunately KITTY LIPPS (7) manage to mix a jagged southern sound with eighties hard rock with some interesting results. Vocalist Jacky Rogue commands the stage as Lee Downs lays down enough sleazy riffs to fill up the venue. The songs are primed and ready for the live environment, resulting in the front row mixing their moves between dirty dancing and a light mosh. The inclusion of a Limp Bizkt verse/chorus is slightly bemusing but they just about get away with it.rnrnWhen they played in Dartford in June TRES CALAVERAS (8) slammed down a set of dark rock gems which were witnessed by only a handful of people in a post Download Festival live slump. The 'Looks Dirty' night was a much better podium for such a fine display of demonised hard rock. If anything they sound heavier tonight with the drumming from Sky London seething with a nuclear intent. The amount of influences they squeeze into their blackened performance is admirable with 'Weak boy chorus' managing to combine the cool laid back vibe of early Faith No More, thanks to a annoyingly catchy bass line with a moody, Manson/Danzig-like vocal display from Lee Edwards. A cover of Amen's 'The price of reality' tweaks at the heaviness even more, and like Generation Graveyard at the same venue in July, they drag heavy rock into a guttural, punk sharpened abyss.rnrnTonight was also the official launch for the 'Dagger in my heart' single from South East London hard rockers SILICONE BULLET (7). Front man Bobby Valentine puts on a commendable performance despite, like half the country, struggling with a cold, his David Lee Roth-like movements drawing the crowd into the music. Once the band hit third track 'It's over' the voice is warming and a wonderful Cinderella-esque riff introduces the track that appeared on the 'Music Fusion' industry compilation earlier in the year. 'Dagger in my heart' itself gets the arses shaking in the front rows before the sleaze ridden 'Seven sisters' manages to drag the most women onto a London stage since Drugdealer Cheerleader were last in town. The ballad 'Lonely nights' is not only the highlight of the set but the kind of song that would have been jammed in the US top 10 in the late eighties, its sentiments physically weakening the knees of the ladies in the house, bringing the evening to a close in style.rnrnFive bands came to Lewisham and made it look dirtier than ever.
